Sometimes called "Speckled Trout" or "Specks" by Appalachian anglers, this the native trout of North Carolina and Tennessee. Generally under 10 inches, these are the most beautiful and highly colored trout in North America. They are aggressive feeders and respond well to the fly. Found in some of the most beautiful settings, they are common in small headwaters. The best time of year for pursuit of these works of art is April through October. Although, warm days in winter, can be very good. Mostly due to constraints of fishing small creeks with abundant cover, casting can be challenging. On most streams, casts of less than 20 feet are the norm. Sometimes, casting is little more than "flipping" or "dapping" the fly. Short rods and short leaders work best. Novice, intermediate and experienced anglers will find Brookie fishing rewarding. Beginners should practice a little before attempting to fish such challenging conditions. Brook Trout fishing is as much hiking as fishing. Get on a small stream and start working up with the water's course, fishing plunge pools and small runs. Make several presentations to good holding water and move up to the next likely holding spot and so on. This game is as much about stealth as anything. Fishermen should wear earth tone colored clothing and try to blend in amidst the natural environment. During warmer weather, most Brook Trout fishermen wet wade, choosing to leave the waders at home. While there are many watersheds that contain nice populations of Brook Trout, it doesn't take but one good angler ahead of you to really put a damper on your fishing day. We have secured two beautiful streams on private land to conduct Brook Trout trips. This ensures you will be the only person to fish that headwater on the given day. With such privileged access, anglers can expect catches to be well beyond that of the average angler on public waters.
