The French Broad River System is one of the most prolific Smallmouth Bass fisheries in the east. Larger fish in the 4lb. range are plentiful but this river is best known for shear numbers. Few bodies of water yield the mind numbing quantity of smallies that the French Broad produces regularly. These vicious feeders respond very well to surface patterns and swimming patterns.

The peak of the action usually happens between May and September. Activity may start a little earlier or extend into October with warmer spring and fall seasons.

At its peak, the French Broad River can be a great fishery for beginners. These eating machines respond better to flies hitting the water hard. Anglers with more advanced skills can find great numbers of fish. Six and seven weight rods are the norm when casting larger flies.

Given normal water levels, this is usually a float trip. Should we experience more drought conditions, this can make a great wade trip. Blind casting to likely holding areas is the predominant technique although if water clarity permits, great sight fishing is possible. So be prepared to make a lot of casts.
