The Toe River System is a tale of two rivers. The upper Toe is a great delayed harvest/hatchery supported trout stream, while the lower river is full of eager smallmouth.

Toe River Trout

Delayed Harvest fisheries are where beginning fly fishers can really hone their skills. These stocked trout are aggressive feeders and do not have the discerning menu of their wild counterparts. Anglers of all levels will have a ton of fun fishing the Toe River and Cane Creek for trout.

For trout, the upper Toe River and its feeder stream Cane Creek, have wider open bites from October through April.Fishing the Upper Toe or Cane Creek is a wading experience. Anglers usually select four or five weight rods. A variety of sub-surface flies work well. Anglers should be prepared to fish with indicators for best results, although streamers work with great success. For the angler wanting to learn good streamer techniques, this a great river for developing those skills.

Delayed harvest trout streams are great learning tools for the beginning angler. Combine the environment with an experienced guide and you have a regular trout fishing school.

Toe River Smallmouth Bass

The lower Toe River is a great smallmouth bass fishery. A lucky angler may even tangle with one of our Musky. The peak of the action usually happens between May and September. Activity may start a little earlier or extend into October with warmer spring and fall seasons.

At its peak, this can be a great fishery for beginners. These eating machines respond better to flies hitting the water hard. Anglers with more advanced skills can find greater numbers of fish. Six and seven weight rods are the norm, when casting larger flies.

Given normal water levels, this is usually a float trip. Should we experience more drought conditions, this can make a great wade trip. Blind casting to likely holding areas is the predominate technique. So be prepared to make a lot of casts. These vicious feeders respond very well to surface patterns and swimming patterns.
