The upper Tuckasegee River is a great Delayed Harvest fishery. Located south of Asheville, North Carolina, the Tuck is a big river with lots of access. The Tuckasegee is one of the prettiest rivers in Western North Carolina. Like all Delayed Harvest fisheries, the Tuckasegee has wide open bites from October through April.

Delayed Harvest fisheries are where beginning fly fishers can really hone their skills. These stocked trout are aggressive feeders and do not have the discerning menu of their wild counterparts. Anglers of all levels will have a ton of fun fishing the Tuckasegee River trout.

Fishing the Tuck is mostly a wading experience although float trips are possible given sufficient water flows. Anglers usually select four or five weight rods. A variety of sub-surface flies work well. Anglers should be prepared to fish with indicators for best results, although streamers and dry flies can work with great success.

Delayed harvest trout streams are great learning tools for the beginning angler. Combine the environment with an experienced guide and you have a regular trout fishing school.
